We just celebrated Nex’s 8th birthday. The company has gone through multiple iterations — from the mobile basketball training app HomeCourt, to the motion game Active Arcade, and now, to the active game console Nex Playground.
What’s changed is the form factor of how we serve the world.
What’s stayed remarkably consistent is why we do it — and who we are.
I took a walk down memory lane and looked back at our mission statements over the years. With each chapter, we’ve sharpened our focus.
HomeCourt: Utility and Joy for Basketball Players Worldwide.
We started with something useful (utility) and fun (joy) for ourselves as basketball players, and for a sport that is dear to us.
Active Arcade: Transform Activity into Play
Then, during the pandemic, we saw how our work could extend far beyond basketball. We were helping people stay active — and making it fun. We were transforming activity into play. Users loved our apps, but it was getting obvious that the experience could be a lot better on a big screen, and we still hadn’t answered: Who exactly are we building for?
Playground: Connecting Families and Friends Through Active Play
The third iteration brought that answer front and center. With Nex Playground, we’re creating a new kind of experience for families.
If we succeed, we’ll see a generation of healthy and active kids growing up more connected to their families and friends.
That’s a big idea. That’s our YOLO.
